Bringing Nature into Public Decision Making

Institution of Civil Engineers

On July 15th Oxford University and the LEEP Institute held an event entitled “Bringing Nature into Public Decision Making” which asked the question:

Are the joint objectives of restoring nature and boosting economic growth incompatible?

This event will explore evidence on this question and propose general solutions to improve decision-making and increase the effectiveness of tax-payer money. It will investigate key changes to the approach towards biodiversity and nature in the government’s Guidelines for Government Spending: The Treasury Green Book, which will incorporate recommendations of the Dasgupta Review in response to the government’s new direction on growth. To reflect the commitments of the 25 year Environmental Plant, the Environment Act, and international commitments such as the Kunming-Montreal Agreement, a plan to price nature and biodiversity in government decisions will be proposed. This will include a Target and Cost Analysis (TCA) approach to nature, which will help the government navigate its strategy and ensure decision-making considers these wider societal commitments in a way that limits damages and maximises complimentary relationships between nature, growth and well-being.
